After over two decades, the Rizhao-Incheon container route has received regulatory approvals to reestablish a direct sea link between Shandong, China, and South Korea.

This milestone marks renewed momentum in one of Asia's busiest short-sea trade corridors.

Scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026, the Rizhao-Incheon service will operate two fixed-schedule sailings per week, averaging eight departures monthly. This direct maritime channel will prioritize cross-border e-commerce, mechanical equipment, automotive products, and high-value cargo. The fixed schedule offers greater predictability for freight forwarders, enabling efficient supply chain cycles and supporting the increasing trade activity between China and South Korea.

Shandong Ocean Shipping Group Co., a subsidiary of Shandong Port Group, will manage operations. The company has long specialized in China-Korea short-sea transport, running routes to Pyeongtaek, Busan, Incheon, and Jeju. Adding the Rizhao-Incheon corridor strengthens its presence in the Korea trade network and enhances the region's maritime connectivity.

Rizhao Port distinguishes itself with direct rail access via the Wari and Yanzhi Railways. This integrated transport model streamlines the movement of inland cargo, reducing costs and accelerating consolidation for export. For enterprises across Shandong and nearby regions, this rail-port synergy broadens export opportunities to South Korea.

Incheon Port, a key trade gateway on South Korea's western coast, plays a critical role in China-Korea trade. The Rizhao-Incheon route reinforces this connection, enhancing the maritime relationship between Shandong and South Korea during an era of growing intra-Asian trade under the RCEP framework. As regional trade accelerates, competition among Chinese coastal ports—such as Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo Zhoushan, and Rizhao—has intensified, with each expanding its short-sea networks to key markets like South Korea, Japan, and ASEAN.

The Rizhao-Incheon route is a strategic addition to this evolving maritime network. It offers Shandong businesses a reliable, efficient logistics solution to access the South Korean market, meeting the demands of a dynamic trade landscape. By leveraging Rizhao's structural advantages and Incheon's strategic position, this service creates new opportunities for regional exporters and strengthens the broader China-South Korea trade corridor.
